Go up to the terrace to collect peppers, courgettes and potatoes: the cultivation in pots it can be the ideal solution for those who do not have a garden but still want grow vegetables and get good harvests. On balconies and terraces not only ornamental plants go but a real one can be set up home garden.

The vase. First of all, the choice of vases must not be random; unfortunately too often the vase is chosen following only one's own tastes, regardless of the real needs of the plant, there are plastic, terracotta and multi-material vases. Before proceeding to one or the other choice, if so grow on the terrace or balcony, you have to be careful to understand the weight that the slab can bear, if you don't want to consult a technician, choose the plastic pots that are having great success due to their lightness and manageability. If you are sure of the capacity of the slab, then dare and choose a terracotta pot which, in addition to being more elegant, allows the roots to breathe better, and the terracotta pot can give indications about "when to water the plants". The dimensions of the pot must be chosen according to the plant to grow, for example, low rectangle for salads and lettuce, large rectangular pots for potatoes, tomatoes and fennel. To give a greater sense of organization to yours cultivation in pots and avoid that feeling of clutter, it is important to purchase vases of the same material.

The drainage. The drainage layer at the bottom of the pot is useful to prevent the water from stagnating. For the same reason, it is important to ensure that the vase is not placed entirely on the ground but that terracotta bricks are placed at the two edges to create an air corridor under each vase in your home garden. The draining layer that is created on the bottom of the pot can be made with expanded clay, a light and easily available material on the market. For smaller pots (20x25cm) it will be enough to distribute a little clay on the bottom in order to cover the flow hole of the pot. For larger pots (34x40cm) it will be necessary to prepare a layer of clay about 7cm thick.

The choice of soil. For the cultivation in pots it is essential to buy an ad hoc soil, it is not recommended to use field soil because it can sometimes be devoid of useful nutrients for the plant. For the cultivation of vegetables the most suitable soil is the universal one which, however, could struggle to drain the water, therefore it will be advisable to make some changes: open the bag of soil, pour it on the floor and mix it with your hands or with a trowel, if the soil is enough " packed ”, add a minimum amount of sand (amount equal to 5-15% of the total weight of the bag of soil you have purchased). After preparing the soil, fill the pots leaving a free space between the soil and the top edge of the pot, this should be half a centimeter for the smallest pots up to 2.5cm for the larger pots. Remember that the soil should be replaced annually in small pots, while in larger pots it should only be partially replaced.

Fertilization. The frequent irrigations that a home garden, deprive the soil of the nutrients the plant needs. This is why it is necessary to fertilize yours periodically vegetable garden. On the market there are various types of fertilizer, very valid for cultivation in pots they are slow release fertilizers, called "slow release". They usually come in the form of granules to be incorporated into the soil 2 or 4 times during the entire life cycle of the plant. Those who want to fertilize with natural products can use products such as guano or algae-based fertilizers. There are also powder or liquid products on the market that are administered to the plant during irrigation (fertigation), in the doses and with the times indicated on the product label.
